When Life Hurts: Moving from “Why?” to “Who?”
When tragedy strikes, our first question is often “Why?” Why did this happen? Why them? Why now?
But after experiencing the loss of three of my four children, I discovered that “Why?” isn’t the question that brings healing. A better question is, “God, what are You trying to teach me?”
Romans 8:28 promises that God works all things for good for those who love Him. Through deep grief, I learned two truths: God loved my children more than I ever could, and my role was not to hold Him up, but to let Him hold me.
Over time, I realized that even “What?” wasn’t the deepest question. The most important one is “Who?” — Who do I say God is in the middle of pain, and who am I becoming through it?
Hebrews 13:8 tells us that Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Circumstances change, but His character does not. Our call is to trust Him, even when we don’t understand.
