The Biblical Principle of Paying Your Taxes

“Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.” – Matthew 22:21

Paying taxes may not be something we look forward to—but it is, in fact, a biblical principle rooted in obedience, integrity, and trust in God’s sovereignty.

When Jesus was questioned by the Pharisees about paying taxes to the Roman government—a trap to catch Him in political controversy—He responded with profound wisdom. Holding up a Roman coin, He asked whose image was on it. “Caesar’s,” they replied. Jesus then said, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s” (Matthew 22:21).

This moment teaches us two important truths:

1. God is sovereign over all human authority.
   Romans 13:1-7 reinforces this by reminding believers that all governing authorities are established by God. To submit to them—including in paying taxes—is to respect God’s order.

2. There is a distinction between earthly responsibility and eternal allegiance.
   While we are called to honor our civil duties, we are also reminded to give God what is His: our hearts, our worship, and our lives.

Paying taxes, then, is not just a financial transaction—it’s an act of integrity and obedience. As Christian business leaders and professionals, honoring this responsibility reflects our trust in God’s provision and our witness in the marketplace.

“This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing.” – Romans 13:6

May we honor God not only in how we give, but also in how we live.
