Right Thinking – The Three Steps to Transforming Your Mind
By Eldon Kibbey
For as a person thinks, so he is.
That simple proverb is the foundation of our lives: Our thoughts determine our actions, and our actions determine who we are. If we are to make good decisions, it is essential to think correctly. Learning these three steps to Right Thinking can be life-changing.
Step One: Unlimited Thinking
It’s easy to claim, “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” But how do we live that out? The key is to recognize that throughout life, the winds of adversity will be blowing in our faces; we must lean forward into the wind in our thinking.
This means consciously viewing difficulties as opportunities, not just problems. If you’ve been a negative thinker, seeing things from the standpoint of lack or difficulty, this step requires you to reject the discouraging voices—the ones that tell you you’re not good enough—and embrace the limitless power available through Christ.
Step Two: Christ-like Thinking
Right thinking is modeled perfectly in Jesus Christ. We are called to “Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus.” What attitude was that?
Jesus exhibited servant leadership by:
Humbling Himself: He gave up His godly rights in Heaven and took the form of a bond-servant on Earth.
Being Obedient: He was totally submissive to the will of the Father, even to the point of death on a cross to conquer sin.
Being Faithful: He was faithful to His calling as the perfect sacrifice.
Christ-like Thinking is about embodying this humble, obedient, and faithful servant leadership attitude in your own life and work.
Step Three: Positive Thinking
Finally, we must focus our minds deliberately. We are told to dwell on these things: whatever is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise.
These are all positives! Thinking on these things will actively dispel the negative thoughts that destroy us and hold us back.
The world is hung-up on Wrong Thinking. But you are called to a higher standard. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Allow God to transform your mind to Right Thinking!
